The Untold Story Of Selena Quintanilla, The Queen Of Tejano Music

Selena Quintanilla, also known as Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, was a shining star in the list of American singers. She started her journey at the tender age of 9 and covered the distance to the world stage very soon and ruled the hearts of millions. She was meant to initiate a revolution in the history of Latin music but at the age of 23, the talented rising Star died and the world lost the gem. Who is Selena Quintanilla?

The Mexican -American pop star Selena Quintanilla is famously known as a Singer or perhaps some of you might be knowing about her being a songwriter too. But very few are aware of the fact that the talented legendary singer and Songwriter was also a Business Woman and Activist.

She was born on 16th April in 1971 in Texas, USA. She was an English native speaker and later she learned Spanish too. She earned the title of “The Queen of Tejano Music” from her followers.

Her magical voice and charismatic personality ruled the hearts of millions in the 20th century and her iconic fashion sense ruled millions of minds. The late star is one of the top Greatest Latino Artists of all time.

Selena’s career involves a great contribution from her family. Her father, Abraham Quintanilla realized the remarkable potential of her daughter and he created a family band. She was launched as a singer at the age of 9 in this family band called, “Selena y Los Dinos”.

She initially used to perform in family restaurants with her sister and brother, Suzette Quintanilla and Abraham Isaac Quintanilla respectively. But soon it closed down, then they performed in the streets, at weddings, and everywhere possible where they could get gigs. This is how the journey continued from the streets to the global spotlight.

Quintanilla inaugurated The Selena Foundation which is a charity committed to helping children in crisis. Selena: The Series, is Selena’s biographical show that premiered on Netflix on 4th December in 2020.

Selena Quintanilla’s marriage

Selena got married to Chris Perez, She didn’t have any children. Chris and her love story is no less of a movie script. In 1986, Chris Perez joined the family band as a guitarist. Then their love story secretly proceeded but when Selena’s father found out about their love story, he fired Chris from the band.

Afterwards, the love birds decide to flee away and get married secretly in 1992. Selena Quintanilla’s family accepted the couple but after a few years of her marriage, she died.

Selena’s first album

Selena’s first album was released in 1984 called, Mis Primeras Grabaciones, later a total of 11 albums were created out of which 6 she did with the family band. Almost all of the albums were a hit and her album copies have sold more than millions of copies worldwide.

Selena’s success story

Selena’s short journey has been incredibly glamorous just like the star herself was!
She won best female vocalist and performer of the year in 1987 in Mexico at Tejano Music Awards, which she later won 8 times.

In her lifetime She was nominated for 86 awards out of which she bagged 67 awards. Also, She earned 14 Billboard Latin Music Awards and the list goes on and on. She was tagged as “The Queen of Tejano Music” by prominent media houses and magazines.

When is Selena day?

The iconic pop star was assassinated just 16 days before her 24th birth anniversary on March 31 in 1995.  She was shot by a gun on her back by Yolanda Saldívar, who was Selena’s employee and she knew already. She died due to heavy blood loss and heart arrest after being shot with the gun in Texas, U.S.A

April 16 is celebrated as “Selena Day,” in honour of the late Mexican -American music star Selena Quintanilla. At the age of just 23, she died. But the masterpieces she has left behind are immortal. 

This was the journey of Selena Quintanilla which later inspired other legends to shine brighter.
